Do #1, 2, and 3, plus two others. Vectors in bold type.
1. Explain these symbols (what they are, units of measurement, significance, etc.); M, m, B, and k.
2. Explain how we use the Biot Savart Law to derive formulae for the magnetic effects of simple geometrical bodies.
3. Write about the diurnal variation of the magnetic field (cause, characteristics, importance, etc.)
4. Sketch South to North vertical component anomalies over a sphere with induced magnetization. One profile is located at the North magnetic pole, one at 45 degrees North latitude and one at the equator. Explain your work.
5. Sketch Wenner resistivity sounding curves for these situations:
B. damp clay/dry sand/wet clay
C. dry sand/permafrost/saturated sand
6. Discuss the use of seismic refraction, seismic reflection and magnetics to determine the depth to crystalline bedrock beneath a sedimentary basin. The basin is about 100 km wide with about 3 km of sedimentary rock. Describe your field program. Discuss the pros and cons of each method.
7. Write a brief thesis proposal based on a magnetic survey. Include purpose, geology of area, field program, data analysis and expected results.
